Impact of Climate Change on Farmers in Sierra Leone - 2009

Sierra Leone is found on the West Coast of Africa and during the pre-colonial era, the country known for it's conducive atmosphere. But today the issue of climate change is the order of the day.

Climate change leads to serious implications on agriculture, biodiversity and food security, leading to hunger and poverty. Changes in temperature and weather patterns influence drought, flood, access to water and use of land.

Climate change is becoming more of a threat than the HIV/AIDS pandemic?

As we continue to talk climate change, it is becoming more clear that there is an urgent need for more effective and positive drastic actions to protect our environment and our common humanity.

On Wednesday the 19th of August 2009, a heavy poor down of rain in the Sierra Leonean Capital Freetown destroyed houses and killed people and swept away their properties.
The rain was so heavy that roads were blocked and vehicles and human had no access but sought nearby haven for refuge.

Campaign messages to protect nature and our environment, Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone as can be seen on the world map is a small country located on the Western Part of Africa, bounded by Guinea, Liberia and the Atlantic Ocean.

A country that was known for it abundance in natural resources and mostly sufficient pure drinking water, recently experienced for the first time shortage in the supply of water to it inhabitants.

Sierra Leone facing less rains

As I read the article about Kenya, then I just begin to realize that this is truly a global crisis. Sierra Leone as a country usually experiences rains in early or mid May, but due to the high level of deforestation for the purpose of burning coals, fetching woods and building dwellings, the country has not experienced rains and hereby making it very difficult for the Government to switch on the Bumbuna Hydro Electric power supply engine that has just been completed.
