Changing climatic conditions in Nepal
Recently, I have completed a case study with discussions, field survey, and interviews with local peoples regarding changing climatic conditions, pattern of rainfall and public views. Most of the respondents reported since 15 years, they are observing the changing pattern of climate that affects their daily life such as farming and fishing. According to the respondents more than 30 percent of rice farmers could not able to transplant in this year due to rainfall pattern changes. Almost all the rice seedlings are burnt out in seed beds and fields become fallow because of no rain or water. It is becoming difficult to imagine how these people will survive in next year. The fisher people are not getting fish as it was before. Some farmer are shifting their farming system such as rice farm into maize, vegetables or any other cash crops. This indicates that indigenous foods such as minor crops species will disappear. Nepal Government, Ministry of Agriculture is going to change agriculture policy to adapt to global changing scenario in the name of climate change. Indigenous agro-biodiversity has close affinity with their culture, religion, spirituality and livelihoods. It is now critical and very important to conserve for IPs identities. They will be replaced by 'GMO' (genetically modified organisms?) that could effect indigenous traditional lifestyle.
