Uganda’s Sources of Energy And Climatic Change
Energy Sources:
- Petroleum products
- Wind Energy
- Solar Energy
- Geo-thermal
- Thermal Energy
- Bio-gas
- Bagasse
- Fuel-wood
- Hydro-Electricity
ISSUES IMPACTING ON SUSTAINABLE ENERGY DEVELOPMENT
1. There are several sources of energy in Uganda. Apart from the wood fuel provision, which is common-place, Hydro electricity seems to be most popular much as it is used by only 9% of the Ugandan population. This is so because it is clean and renewable.
2. Over 80% of the population depends on Agricultural production; above all, sustainable and productive Agricultural practice greatly depends on a balanced environment. How can farmers be mobilized in the area of Agro-forestry?
3. Renewable Energy is an environment asset in that it reduces gas emissions and will negate unfavourable climatic conditions.
4. Uganda’s venture in sustainable energy and climatic change solutions greatly depends on the management and rational use of Lake Victoria and the Nile. This includes the small rivers and wetland resources, which feed the two notable water bodies. That territorial inter-dependence will determine the water quality and quantity component, the water levels, and the hydraulic conditions therein.
5. We must be mindful of the perceived tension between the cost of access and cost of environmental sustainability. A lot of Energy is wasted. That energy should be affordable so as to strike a balance between the user and the sustainable aspect. How can people be persuaded to see a social good in the planting and maintenance of Forestry covers?
6. Aggressive climatic changes in Uganda have a bearing on the way we use our resources including the energy resource. This is a global challenge. The continuous increase in Carbon concentrations in the atmosphere is causing negative consequences to the Global Environment and Uganda is not an exception. The need to conserve Energy has therefore a notable bearing on climatic change.
