Climate change as seen in Nepal
Namaste
According to the scientific research average temperature of Nepal is increasing at the rate of 0.06 degree Celsius annually. The record of Climate department of Nepal has indicated that past 32 yrs since 1975 to 2006 the average temperature of Nepal has been increased in 1.8 degree Celsius. Due to the growth in temperature following circumstances like as, annual rainy period is changed, long time drought, Heavy rain.
At present effect of climate change has been seen in Nepal.
Different factors, like industrialization, deforestation and increments in transportation means increased in greenhouse gas production and increasingly greenhouse gas caused to increase in temperature of atmosphere.
Due to the growth in temperature following circumstances like, annual rainy period is changed, long time drought, heavy rain has occurred.
- Both Day and Night time is being hot as in before.
- Cold Day and Night time is being declined.
- More then 100 mm rainy seasonal days are being enlarged.
- Rainy seasonal time and period is being changing.
- Himalayan rivers are being thinner and shorter and area of Himalayan ponds are expanded.
In northern side of Kathmanu Nepal, water level in Holy Gosaikund pond’s water level is decreasing as in before. According to the pilgrims no snow can be seen around the pond in this season. Till 5-6 yrs before we can see snow during this season. This pond is situated at 4300m.
On the other hand, untimely rain and long time drought period pessimistically effected in major crops production like wheat, maize and paddy production in hilly region and paddy, wheat and potato production in terrain region. Similarly, in western region of Nepal long time drought period seriously caused less production in major crops. So, quantity of agricultural products are decreasing. It indicates that scarcity of food will be seen next year. And water sources are not sufficient in western Nepal. Due to lack of pure drinking water more than 300 people have died to date by endemic diarrhea dehydration problem. In Nepal, government policy on climate change is in final stage drafting. I think, Nepal government is not serious on this issue.
These are some examples only. Regularly, I will deliver further latest experiences and events in my surroundings in detail.
