Global warming: What the world is worried about?
My worries and suggested mitigation to global warming.
Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceans. increasing in greenhouse gas concentrations resulting from human activity such as fossil fuel burning and deforestation are responsible for most of the observed temperature increase.
Research has shown that increasing global temperature will cause sea levels to rise and will change the amount and pattern of precipitation, probably including expansion of subtropical deserts. The continuing retreat of glaciers, permafrost and sea ice is expected, with the Arctic region being particularly affected. Other likely effects include shrinkage of the Amazon rainforest and Boreal forests, increases in the intensity of extreme weather events, species extinctions and changes in agricultural yields.
EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING
It usually is impossible to connect specific weather events to global warming. Instead, global warming is expected to cause changes in the overall distribution and intensity of events, such as changes to the frequency and intensity of heavy precipitation.
Broader effects are expected to include glacial retreat, Arctic shrinkage, and worldwide sea level rise. Other effects may include changes in crop yields, species extinctions, and changes in the range of disease vectors.
Some effects on both the natural environment and human life are, at least in part, already being attributed to global warming. A 2001 report by the IPCC suggests that glacier retreat, ice shelf disruption such as that of the Larsen Ice Shelf, sea level rise, changes in rainfall patterns, and increased intensity and frequency of extreme weather events are attributable in part to global warming. Other expected effects include water scarcity in some regions and increased precipitation in others, changes in mountain snowpack, and adverse health effects from warmer temperatures. Social and economic effects of global warming may be exacerbated by growing population densities in affected areas.
SUGGESTED WAY OUT?
• Improve energy efficiency and limited moves towards use of renewable energy
• Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme should be encouraged
• Improve changes in agricultural practices to suits climate change should be adopted
• Construction of flood defenses
• Interventions to protect threatened species
• Geoengineering is the deliberate modification of Earth's natural environment on a large scale to suit human needs. An example is greenhouse gas remediation, which removes greenhouse gases from the atmosphere, usually through carbon sequestration techniques such as carbon dioxide air capture
• Tree planting exercise could also help in carbon sequestration.
• More awareness on dangers associated with global warming should be created particularly in the developing nation of the world.
CONCLUSION
The potential effects of an increasing in global warming on our environment are very serious, which could impact all life in the planet. The findings of this report suggested that it should be a major policy focus when dealing with problems of climate change.
